How To Clean Beauty Blender

There are many YouTube videos on different ways of cleaning beauty blenders. Some can ruin your blender and even reduce its life. So, here is a step by step guide on how you can clean your beauty blender properly. This is how I was taught to clean it during my makeup classes in Delhi.

STEP 1: USE A GENTLE to MILD CLEANSER

Take a gentle soap such as Johnson's baby or Dove in your palms, and wet it to create lather. 

Don'ts

❌Use oil to clean beauty blenders
❌Soak beauty blender for too long in water
❌Use dishwasher liquid, harsh shampoos, or detergent to clean your beauty blender.

Since the beauty blenders are porous in nature, the oil may go into the pores of the sponge and, despite proper cleaning, may clog the pores. (Makes sense, as the same thing happens with our skin too). The dishwasher liquid or shampoo may affect the sponge quality badly and may make the sponge stiff. 

For flawless makeup, it is very important to have a squeeshy soft and high quality beauty blender, so it's better to follow the right way of cleaning to preserve its original quality. 

STEP 2: WRAP THE SPONGE in THE LATHER CREATED on YOUR PALMS

Just toss the sponge gently in your palms to cover it with lather, and then start squeezing it gently. You will notice the foundation, etc., coming out. Please note, it is okay to have stains on your sponge. Certain foundation or blush or contour stains may be left behind, but don't try to wash the sponge too many times or for too long time to take these stains out. When the blender stays in water for too long or is rubbed again and again with soap, it may just absorb excess water and soap, which could be hard to squeeze out, thereby resulting in the damaging of the sponge. 

STEP 3: RINSE IT DIRECTLY UNDER RUNNING WATER

Like we mentioned, soaking a soapy sponge is a bad idea as it may just harden the sponge. Hence, instead of soaking, just wash it directly under running water immediately after the step 2. 

STEP 4: TOWEL DRY

After cleaning, take out the excess water by wrapping the sponge in a towel or a tissue paper. 

STEP 5: AIR DRY 

After towel drying. now keep your sponge on a stand or in any open container in a well ventilated room. 

Don'ts

❌Keep a damp/wet beauty blender in a closed place, container, or a drawer. 

❌Keep it in a humid area or under direct sunlight.

FAQs

1. How often should we clean our beauty sponge?

If it is your personal sponge, clean it every single time after you use it. Otherwise, you may get breakouts due to bacteria. and if you are a make up artist, better to use disposable puffs. If you are using blenders, again, clean them after every single use. 

2. Should we use warm water or cold water to wash the sponge?

You can use normal or lukewarm water to clean the sponge. 

3. Can I use Dettol hand wash or my shampoo to clean the sponge?

Don't. They are harsh and may damage the sponge material. 

Ideally, the beauty sponge becomes softer with more usage, when cleaned the right way.

4. When should I change my beauty sponge?

It depends on how frequently you use your blender. Some people advise to change it every 3 months, and then there are people who use the same blender for a year.
